Magazine Name Survey

I had many ideas for my magazine name, but I didn't know what to call it. I could not then plan the rest of the magazine without the name and its colour scheme etc and also need to make a 5 line paragraph without referring to my magazine as ' my magazine'. Therefore i decided to make a survey to see what magazine name my audience prefers and think is the best. Not as many people participated in this as i wanted but the majority voted for Sound Check and I found out that Thrasher is already a magazine. Which therefore leaves Sound Check as the magazine name. I think this is appropriate for the magazine name as it suggests it is about live music and I am planning to photograph and interview a band before/after their first headlining gig. It is appropriate and attracts to the target audience as they all saw live music at least 2 times a year.

Masthead ideas

This is an idea for a masthead of my magazine.
I have used red as the main colour as i found this was used most in rock magazine. I used 2 R's as the mast head , like NME and Q because it enables the masthead to be made larger and the image would stand out more than writing. I wrote the name of the actual magazine on the letters so that they can easily tell what its actually called.
I had other ideas about making the hole in the 'R' in the shape of a guitar but I will try this out when I know what I will actually call my magazine after I have collected my results from my survey. I changed the font of the text to see what would look best for a rock magazine and i think that the bottom last one would be the best, however I do like the simple font on the last image and is similar to 'rock sound's' font. I think the text on the other mastheads are too small but I like the idea, however the last masthead has the most visual impact

Mind Map

This is my mind map of ideas for my music magazine. I have mainly used information from my survey for ideas as I want to make a magazine that will appeal to my audience. I have put down the most important ideas that my audience want, for example many people say that the most important part is the interviews and date planner etc and they are interested in finding out about new music.

Reader Profile

Young 15-24 year olds enjoy original and unique music that is not always available on the radio and other mainstream areas. Enjoy experiencing the music first hand, going to live advents. Value friendships and they tend to be musically literate

The type face of the KERRANG! masthead is all in capital letters, this immediately shows that the music is loud. The letters of the masthead are cracking also representing this as the music is so loud it breaks the letters. The colour of the font tends to be black or white and if neither of them are used it would tend to be red. these colours used represents the darkness of the music and the solid colours allows you to see the cracks more clearly than if they were pastel.

This is different to mix mag magazine because then tend to use bright neon pastel colour for their mast head but the main colour tends to be white. this represent the light 'heartedness' of the music and the neon colours would represents raves. The 'mix mag' masthead text is written in lower case, a significant instant difference between the two mast heads. The font is softer and ‘flows’ more than the kerrang text which is sharp. This ‘roundness’ of the text is like how the songs of ‘club’ music follow on to eachother without any gaps, this is also emphasized by the round circle in the ‘I‘ which looks like a vinyl.

Student Magazine - Front Page

These are images of my final college magazine front cover and contents page.

I have made them 'match' by using the same colour scheme and font.
I have made small changes to the original ideas on the flat plan as it was difficult to actually fit it all in ledgibly. To make the pages I combined good ideas from my reasearch and improved on areas i thought it did not have. For example,I noticed that the magazine I looked at did not have separate sections for the articles, regulars and features, in the contents page. On recognising this, I decided to include this in my own contents as I think it would be a more effective as it makes the main features of the issue stand out therefore easier to find if someone found the issue wanting to know more about articles on the front page. I took aboard the idea of using appropriate language to describe my articles to appeal to students, e.g Regulars, all the familiar faces. I also liked the idea of having a little intro piece written by the editor, so I incorporated this idea into my magazine in order to let the reader feel they know the writer, get an overall idea of what the issue is about and makes the reader feel more involved. "hello to all new students!" is the welcome message i used for my magazine it's in larger font so it stands out. It's a nice way to reach readers that have not seen the magazine before, as it directly speaks to them and welcomes you, like a book series where some people may not have read the previous books so there is an introduction to let people know what it's about so they dont put the book down as they don't understand whats happening. Another thing that i thought was lacking from the magazine i looked at, was pictures to show what the articles were about, it's okay saying the article heading and and breif sentence but you dont know what to expect, so i used my own original photos to help the reader know what was in the magazine. using pictures is more eyecathing and you dont have write lots of infomation to try describe the article which would waste space, they also emphasize and prove infomation in the text. For example, i used a photo to show what was in the article "style in season". The information about the articles says " hottest autumn looks for small prices" without the picture we do not know what the writer thinks hot is and you may not believe the statement as it's your own opinion what a small price is. Using the photo in this case, therefore shows the reader exactly what the writer means, shows you what is included in the outifit as you dont know if it's just an item. The main reason i chose to use pictures is because i wanted the main features of the magazine to stand out as there is a lot of text there and i used them to prove the text. For example the picture i created for student discount, if it was not included in the contents , in the magazine i would think that it is just an advertisment and less likely to think about it, on the contents page , it is easier to find for students who may be looking for advice and help for students and the picture tells you exactly what the offer is and what kind of transport. Overall i think the articles and infomation about them that I chose were appropriate and would appeal to students because i did throughrough reaseach into the features of a real uni magazine and created a 'student reader profile' that supported the information on articles gatherd from the magazine.

The design and front cover.
As previously mentioned, i used a colourscheme and font to match the front cover and contents page. I made the decsion on using blue as i knew i needed a colour that stod out from the magazine reasearch i saw that using pink was very effective and that i noticed in my reader profile that a lot of items where blue. Also young people tend to enjoy socialising and if you think about it most social networks sites also use blue, therfore showing that it a colour that students are familar with and can relate to. I used black and white a long with this as the black stands out against the white and i needed colours that were quite general and not associated with a certain gender as my target audience were students.
The magazine that i looked at did not have a MCU it only had the magazine logo . this is effective in making that stand out but gives little information about the issue. Therefore i decided to include an appropriate MCU to show what was in the magazine as i felt that a student magazine could include a variety of articles, a picture will help establish if the information within the magazine is relevant to the reader. I put the picture in black and white as i thought it blended in better with the white background as i felt there was too much space, this also in turn, enabled the text of the main articles really stand out to the reader, which i feel is important, as the white box surrouding the text contrasts with the blackness of the picture. I think that if the image was in colour, it would look too busy and the text would not stand out as the box would be lost with with paler colours. the front cover looks simple but is effective this way using purely 3 colours, which ,now i look back at the front cover of the magzine research, also have a main colour and black and white (and i just noticed it used a black and white photo) and it itself really caught my attention.

Masthead

i have chosen this kind of font because i think that it would appeal to students. It is in captial letters which stands out, it is not too fancy or follow a particular theme. It's 'loud' which could represent the nature of a student. Having 'voice' written the other way stands out and makes you read it as it is not what you are use to. I created the logo myself by using shapes, and i think that it helps emphasize the title of the magazine. I used blue as the colour of the logo as the most frequent colour used in my reader profile and having a simple block of colour is eyecatching.

Student Magazine Reader Profile

This is my reader profile I created for my Student Magazine in order to know what kind of content to include within magazine and the colour scheme. the objects within the profile allows me to think of interesting topics and articles that would be included in the magazine such as music reviews, student discounts , game reviews etc.

College/Uinveristy College Magazine Research

This is a university magazine that I have looked at on Issuu. I thought that it was a particular good issue of an university magazine to look at as the issue is on Freshers week, which suggests lots of information and features to be included into the magazine.

The features that are actually contained are:

-Uni life
-events that are happening during freshers’ week ( top 20 things to do during freshers)
-essential items needed for uni & review
-A-Z of Sheffield
- Entertainment:
-New album review
-Local band interview
-Top 10 dupstep songs
-Music store advert
-Listings of music events happening in the area
Interview with radio one DJ that’ll be playing in the area
- film reviews
- games reviews
-Food & drink
Lots and lots of adverts about places to eat
Student offers of alcohol
-Beauty & well being
Lots of adverts and offers/discounts about wellbeing: hair dressers, beauty salons
student discount nights at local mall
worry about what to wear, article about the best outfits that you can get on high street
student fresher based horoscope
- Night life
Lots of adverts about places to go out
new bars, student nights etc

- Housing/living
-adverts for various student accommodation
- advice page on money worries and home sickness

- Cars
adverts for rental cars
driving lessons

These features have been included and appeal to students, as at the beginning of uni there will be lots of new students new to the country and area. Students will look everywhere for guidance and advice so including such features in a magazine is the perfect way to reach students. simply by picking out the main headings (in bold) you can imagine the reader profile for this magazine, you build up a stereotypical student in your mind.

The design
Firstly the bright colours against the dark speech bubble automatically catch your eye, enabling you to easily recognise and find the features. The language used to describe the features also appeals students as it is something they relate to. They tell you who the target audience is and is a catchy way to describe the articles in theme of the issue. e.g Dirty Laundry.

CD Cover Project

This is my CD cover that I made, the genre of music is new wave.
I think that it has turned out well because the colour schemes and the font reflects the music style well. However i think it links with the CD covers I looked at too much i.e the name of the album. Also I think that the back cover is too similar to the front. Overall I think the final outcome turned out well as I looked closely at all areas of this certain style and picked out and combined all the elements that I looked at in the mood board and the CD cover. I have used elements such as bright colours and black and white to make it reflect the style of music and combined the new wave clothing style with the design and album title. I even thought about the shapes (on the back cover) to represent the music and to attract the audience as it is quite loud, bonkers and combines a lot of elements and looks like graffiti written on a ripped up bit of paper.
